Republic of Malta

Malta has long been on my wish list as I have heard from many how beautiful it is, however, I did not expect to be standing at the harbor in the capital of Valletta completely gobsmacked.  There really are no words that can fully describe how incredible and unique Malta is.

With over 7000 years of history the islands have been home to the Phoenicians, the Romans, the Knights of St. John, Napoleon and the British Empire. It finally gained its independence in 1964 and is now a prosperous republic.

Closely associated with the Knights of Malta there are 359 churches spread across it’s 122 sq miles.  The constant ringing of church bells are a reminder of its history as an important crossroad in the passage of time. The island was much contested between the Allied and the Axis alliances during WWII with some16,000 bombs dropped over two years during the Siege of Malta.

Today it is peaceful country with a mix of cultures, stunning architecture, and a proud people making it well worth a visit.  With numerous direct flights available from mainland Europe (1.5 hours from Rome / 2.5 hours from Munich) it s an easy addition to any European itinerary.
